Elisabeth Hawkes

Elisabeth began making jewellery 25 years ago and studied at the John Cass School of Art in London, where she gained a City & Guilds in Precious Jewellery. Following a moveback to her home county of Yorkshire, she went on to set up Watermark Gallery in Harrogate, selling work by contemporary artists and makers.  Since 2024, she has returned full-time to making precious jewellery from her home studio near Ripon.

The inspiration for my inaugural collection comes from the rivers in North Yorkshire. I’ve always loved the patterns made by the flow of water over rocks, the irregular shape of the rocks, the space between the rocks and the reflections of light across the ripples. In particular, the sections of river in the Yorkshire Dales at Grassington, Burnsall and Buckden have always been places that I’ve visited throughout my life.

I also like textiles and discovered that I could knit with fine silver and replicate the patterns of flow across the water. Using a rolling mill I've embossed the knitted pattern on to pieces of fine and sterling silver to create many of the pieces in my collection. This work is combined with the signature shapes I’ve created from sterling silver.
